History

In 5 AH (627 CE), Muslims dug a trench (khandaq) to defend Madinah against a large alliance. The battle became known as the Battle of the Trench.

The small mosques on the western side of Mount Sala' are associated with this battle. Al-Fath Mosque, the largest, was built by Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz between 705 and 711 CE.

A larger modern mosque now stands nearby.
