General information. History is summarised from established sources, and visiting rules come from official guidance, which can change. For religious guidance, consult a qualified scholar.

History

The Battle of Uhud was fought here in 3 AH (625 CE). About seventy companions were martyred, including Hamzah ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet's uncle, known as Sayyid al-Shuhada.

The martyrs are buried in the Uhud Martyrs Cemetery, between Mount Uhud and the small Archers' Hill (Jabal al-Rumat), where the Prophet (peace be upon him) had placed the archers.

Mount Uhud is about 4 km north of the Prophet's Mosque. A hadith describes it as 'a mountain that loves us and we love it'.
